How To Make Paleo BBQ Sauce

20 minutes and two steps is all you need to make a batch.

Step 1 – Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender and process until smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings to personal preference.

Step 2 – Heat over medium heat until gently boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Store in a mason jar for up to two weeks in the refrigerator. Homemade BBQ Sauce also freezes nicely. Use a Ziploc bag for easy storage. Just make sure to let the sauce cool completely before transferring it to a Ziploc bag.

Whole30 BBQ Sauce Brands

Wondering what BBQ Sauce is Whole30 Compliant? Standard store bought barbecue sauces are loaded with preservatives, sugar, soy and/or corn. There are a few store bought sauces we like, but don’t love. Tesserae’s BBQ Sauce is a popular one and Whole30 BBQ Sauce Primal Kitchen is as well. But they cost a mini fortune and homemade bbq sauce is MUCH tastier, in our “not so humble” opinion.

Is BBQ Sauce Whole30 Approved?

This BBQ Sauce recipe is 100% on plan.

TIP: BBQ Sauce is VERY PERSONAL. Play around with the proportions after you’ve taken a taste. If you like a sweeter BBQ sauce, add some extra raisins. If you like it spicy, add in extra chipotle peppers. We stick with a thick sauce, so thin it out with some water if you want a thinner consistency. This is a fantastic baseline Whole30 Sauce recipe that you can tweak, if needed, to fit your style.

Equipment

  • Ninja Blender
  • Wide Mouth Mason Jars

Ingredients

  • 1.5 Cups Vegetable Stock (*Note 1)
  • 1 Can Tomato Paste (6 oz)
  • 1-2 Whole Chipotle Peppers in Adobo, Seeds Removed (*Note 2)
  • 7 tbsp Coconut Aminos
  • 4 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1-2 tbsp Golden Raisins (*Note 3)
  • 1 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Yellow Mustard (*Note 4)
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Paprika
  • 4 Cloves Garlic, Minced
  • Salt, to Taste

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender or food processor and process until smooth. Taste and add 1 extra tbsp. of golden raisins if you prefer a sweeter BBQ sauce or 1 extra chipotle pepper for a smokier/spicier sauce.
  • Add the sauce to a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat to a gentle boil. Reduce to a low simmer for 10-15 minutes until your desired thickness is achieved.
  • Let cool before tasting. Season with salt, to taste.

Notes

Note 1 - Feel free to use chicken stock if not on a vegan diet.
Note 2 - Start with one pepper and add a second if you like a smokier/spicier flavor.
Note 3 - Start with 1 tbsp. and add an extra tbsp if you like a sweeter sauce.
Note 4 - You can also use dijon mustard or 1 tsp of mustard powder instead of yellow mustard.
Note 5 - Make sure to taste the sauce after you blend it and adjust the seasonings to your preference. BBQ sauce is highly personal so what one person likes may not be what you like. Think extra raisins for a sweeter sauce, extra chipotle peppers for smoke or chili powder for spice.
